Estate of Alexander v. Cascade County
$550,000 for the family of a young man who died in the Cascade County jail.
Michael Lee Alexander, Jr. died while in custody at the Cascade County Detention Center. His family wanted answers, and accountability. We brought claims in federal court under the Civil Rights Act, 42 U.S.C. § 1983, and Montana wrongful-death and survival law, against the county and the officials responsible for his care.
Montana caps the damages a county can be made to pay. Within that framework, the case resolved for $550,000, a settlement reported in Montana Law Week. The family chose resolution over trial, and we honored that choice.
