Why Were Mike and Mindy Jack Honored with the 2026 MTLA Citizens Award?

Mike and Mindy Jack of White Sulphur Springs were honored with the 2026 Montana Trial Lawyers Association Citizens Award on August 6 in Whitefish, Montana. Boland Aarab PLLP is incredibly proud to congratulate our clients on this well-deserved recognition of their courage, perseverance, and commitment to accountability in their community.

Standing Up for Their Home and Their Community

Mike and Mindy Jack never set out to become an example of what ordinary Montanans can accomplish when they refuse to give up. They were raising their two boys, managing the Town Pump in White Sulphur Springs, and living in the community they call home when repeated flooding caused devastating damage to their house.

Their home sits near the low point of the city’s stormwater system. In 2023, their basement flooded twice within a matter of weeks. After attempts to resolve the problem through insurance claims, requests for assistance, and city meetings failed, Mike and Mindy faced a difficult decision: walk away from the fight or keep asking for accountability. They chose to keep going.

That decision ultimately led to two years of hard-fought litigation.

They Kept Going When It Would Have Been Easier to Quit

Before finding Boland Aarab PLLP, Mike and Mindy contacted numerous attorneys. Their case was not an easy one, and the cost and difficulty of litigating against a municipal government caused others to turn it down.

We took the case.

Through the litigation, Mike and Mindy remained steady despite the pressure that comes with suing the government in a small Montana community where the parties, witnesses, and even jurors may know one another.

In October 2025, after a week-long trial, a jury returned a $115,000 verdict against the city. The verdict represented something larger than compensation for damaged property. For Mike and Mindy, it was about accountability and the principle that citizens deserve to be heard when government infrastructure causes preventable harm.

Their Persistence Made a Difference Beyond Their Own Property

One of the most remarkable parts of Mike and Mindy’s story is that the impact did not stop at their property line.

As described in our nomination of the Jacks for the Citizens Award, their efforts helped bring sustained attention to White Sulphur Springs’ stormwater problems. The city pursued grant funding for stormwater system improvements following the dispute, creating the potential to protect other homes and families from experiencing the kind of flooding the Jacks endured.

Their willingness to stand their ground was not simply about their own house. They demonstrated what citizenship can look like at its best: asking difficult questions, insisting on accountability, and continuing forward even when the easier path would have been to give up.

Congratulations, Mike and Mindy

We could not be prouder to see them recognized.

When we nominated Mike and Mindy, we described them as embodying “selflessness, integrity, bravery, and remarkable character.” After everything we witnessed during their case, those words still capture why this recognition is so meaningful.

Congratulations, Mike and Mindy. This honor is richly deserved. Thank you for trusting Boland Aarab PLLP to stand beside you, and thank you for showing what can happen when Montanans refuse to accept that nothing can be done.

The Boland Aarab Way

At Boland Aarab PLLP, we believe legal representation begins with listening. Many of the people who come through our doors have already been told no by an insurance company, an institution, a government entity, or sometimes by other attorneys. Our job is to understand what happened, give clients practical and candid advice, and determine whether there is a path forward.

Mike and Mindy’s case reflects the kind of client-centered representation we strive to provide. Litigation can be exhausting and deeply personal. We work to shoulder that burden with our clients, prepare every case carefully, and remain focused on the people whose lives are affected and not simply the legal file in front of us.
